J13 A Collection of Tai Jingnong's Calligraphy Works, Paintings and Seals
Before the calligraphy of Tai Jingnong (1902-1990) gained public acclaim in his later years, he was esteemed primarily as a man of letters and a dedicated professor at National Taiwan University, where he headed the Chinese Language Department for nearly three decades. Born in Anhui Province, Mr. Tai was one of Lu Xun’s (1881-1936) favoured pupils and friend. He taught at l’Université Franco-Chinoise in Beijing, Fu Jen Catholic University, Amoy University (now Xiamen University), among other institutions, before moving to Taiwan in 1946.
A distinguished educator and prolific writer, Tai Jingnong had left behind a rich legacy of scholarship by the time of his death in 1990, at the age of eighty-nine. A calligraphist by hobby, he also produced numerous works of art, using calligraphy to convey, often through classical verses and his own poetry, the frustrations and loneliness he felt after moving to Taiwan in 1946. Mr. Tai’s sons, the late Mr. Tai Yijian and the late Mr. Tai Yigong, preserved some six hundred pieces of their father’s art works, which came to be assembled in Hong Kong over a span of thirty years.
With these works, in commemoration of Mr. Tai’s 120th anniversary, Mr. Hui Lai Ping and Ms. Rosanne Hui co-edited A Collection of Tai Jingnong’s Calligraphy Works, Paintings and Seals, a five-volume set that brings together a representative body of his artistic legacy. The set comprises three volumes devoted to Tai’s calligraphy, one to his ink paintings, and one to his seals. Each calligraphic piece is accompanied by a transcription of the text, and each volume includes essays by Mr. Tai Jingnong, his family, his students, and scholars, offering valuable historical, literary, and scholarly perspectives on Tai’s works.
