HM37 – Special Study on Wu Changshuo
Among contemporary Chinese painters, Wu Changshuo is one of the leading figures of the Shanghai School after Ren Bonian. Not only did he master the essence of traditional Chinese painting, he was also able to integrate the art of poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal carving, and developed a distinctive way of painting Chinese art in a style reminiscent of ancient epigraphs. His artistic innovation greatly influenced contemporary Chinese artists. This issue features over 70 of Wu’s masterpieces from the collection of Wu’s disciples and private collectors in China and overseas. Also included are articles on Wu’s life, his artistic style and selected works, written by Wu’s friends, students, descendants and art historians.
