The early subject of Yu Fei’an’s paintings are mostly freehand flowers, birds and landscape. He adopted a light touch in his paintings, creating a combination of elegant colours and refreshing strokes. Since the 1910s, freehand paintings were most favoured among Chinese artists, while Gongbi works, characterised by fine brushwork and close attention to details, were much neglected. When the latter grew less popular, Yu went against the trend to focus on Gongbi flower and bird paintings, forming a style of his own and leaving considerable influence on the recent development of flower and bird paintings. This issue publishes as many as 50 of Yu’s masterpieces from the collection of the Beijing Fine Art Academy.
