Admired by some as a genius painter and considered by others for his unorthodox style, Shi Lu, founder of the Chang’an School of Painting, is undoubtedly one of the most controversial modern Chinese artists. His work has been criticised as “crude, weird, undisciplined and dark”. This issue introduces Shi Lu’s representative works from the 50s to late 70s, accompanied by essays on his life and art and a report on auction results of his work.
