A highly respected contemporary artist, He Tianjian is often compared to the Four Wangs for his unparalleled work in the creation of landscape paintings. However, He did not leave many works behind. It is estimated that there are only about a thousand pieces of He’s paintings in existence, three hundred of which are in the collection of the Shanghai Chinese Painting Institute. This issue features He Tianjian’s most representative works, along with commentaries by his friends, disciples and other art historians.
